2022 EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SWISS REGULATIONS

SRF, RTS, RSI and RTR (referred to in the Regulations as “SRG SSR”) are looking for a song and artist(s) to represent Switzerland at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest in Italy. Applications must be received between 12:00 (Swiss time) on 1 September 2021 and 12:00 on 15 September 2021.

GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. SRG SSR is looking for a contemporary, striking song that complies with international requirements. The lyrics should have a strong, clear and understandable message.

2. Applications must be submitted with an audio file via the official SRG SSR platform. (srf.ch/eurovision)

3. The application/the song can only be uploaded by the song’s copyright holder(s). Copyright holders may submit no more than five songs each. Uploading a song will be treated as confirmation that all copyright holders agree with the song being entered into the competition, and that nothing prevents the song from taking part in the Swiss selection procedure and the Eurovision Song Contest.

4. By uploading a song, the copyright holders indicate their agreement with the Swiss regulations and the international EBU rules relating to the Eurovision Song Contest.

5. Commercial, religious and non-profit organisations and foundations are prohibited from participating.

6. The copyright holders guarantee that the contractual creation and use of the work, the production and performances do not conflict in any way with any agreements with third parties such as labels, managers, event organisers or agencies. The copyright holders will indemnify SRG SSR against all third-party claims, regardless of time, place and subject matter.

7. Once submitted, songs may not be subsequently withdrawn.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

8. All the submitted song entries will be editorially reviewed and evaluated. Songs that do not meet the quality standard or do not comply with the regulations will be eliminated. The final selection of the song and artist(s) will then be made as part of a multi-stage process, featuring a panel of 100 viewers and a 20-person international jury.

9. Manipulation, attempts at bribery or irregularities in the jury’s voting or the panel may result in the exclusion of the song, the performer(s) and the jury or panel member(s) involved.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THEMATIC CONTENT OR CONCEPTUAL SONGS

10. One of the purposes of the Eurovision Song Contest is to arouse the feelings of the viewers and jury members by addressing certain topics. We therefore encourage composers and lyricists to submit songs that address topical issues or which trigger an emotional reaction or recognition among ESC viewers with their content.

SONG PROVISIONS

11. By submitting their entry, the copyright holders confirm that the submitted song is their own creative work (including music and lyrics) and that it has not been plagiarised in any way.

12. The copyright holder(s) must agree to the EBU’s licensing terms, which form part of the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest.

13. The song submitted cannot be longer than three minutes.

14. Lyrics can be submitted in any language.

15. The song must not contain any lyrics of a political or racist nature, or any lyrics glorifying violence.

16. Instrumental versions are not permitted. All songs must include sung or spoken passages.

17. Songs may be submitted even if the final performer is not yet known. Under these circumstances, the submitted song must feature a demo voice.

18. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by the end of 2021.

19. Songs that do not qualify will not be released by SRG SSR.

20. For quality purposes, SRG SSR may at any time call for a revision of the production or lyrics, and it has the sole right of decision in this respect.

PERFORMER PROVISIONS

21. Performers must accept all regulations relating to the Eurovision Song Contest.

22. Performers may not represent more than one country in the Eurovision Song Contest.

23. If two entries are awarded the same number of points, performers who are Swiss nationals or resident in Switzerland will be given priority. However, nationality is not a deciding factor and does not prohibit anybody from singing in a song.

24. All performers must be at least 16 years old as of 1 May 2022.

25. As songs featuring demo singers can be entered, it must be clearly stated whether the performer wishes to take part in the contest when uploading their song(s).

26. Performers – and thus voices – can be changed by SRG SSR for quality reasons at any time during the selection process. SRG SSR will take the final decision as to which performer(s) will sing which song(s).

27. The participation of the winners of the Swiss selection in the Eurovision Song Contest will be governed by a written contract.

28. Performers must be available for rehearsals from January 2022 onwards, and must be available for promotional engagements and rehearsals in March/April 2022.

29. By signing the contract, performers commit themselves to performing the song, and thus representing Switzerland, at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. The international semi-finals and final are scheduled to be held in Italy in May 2022. Performers will need to spend approximately two weeks in Italy, the timing depending on the EBU’s rehearsal schedule.

LIVE BROADCASTS OF THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

30. Performers will perform their songs live. According to the EBU regulations, all voice parts, including backing vocals, must be sung live.

31. The song can be performed by one or more singers and musicians. The number of people on the stage (including dancers, musicians and backing singers) is limited to six.

32. All instruments are playback.

33. No animals are allowed on stage.

34. Statements, gestures or symbols of a political or racist nature, or which glorify violence, are not permitted.

35. SRG SSR has sole right of decision with regard to staging. Among other things, staging includes clothing, choreography, lighting, LED content and set design.

ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS

36. The EBU publishes the international regulations for the Eurovision Song Contest. Should the international regulations differ from the national regulations, the international regulations will apply. All rules and regulations regarding participation in the semi-finals and/or final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 are set out in these regulations and are binding on the winner of the national selection process.

37. Any entries that do not comply with the national or international regulations will be disqualified by SRG SSR or the EBU.

38. SRG SSR reserves the right to make any necessary adjustments to the selection process and regulations in order to meet desired quality standards.

39. Right of use: SRG SSR can use the work of the final Swiss entry to the European Song Contest free of charge on all vectors (radio, TV, online, social media, etc.) without any conditions or restrictions.

40. Copyright: The song’s copyright holders retain the rights to their work at all times. Remuneration in respect of these rights will be paid via the relevant fee collecting societies (for example, SUISA).

41. The song must not have been published in whole or in part before 1 September 2021 (radio, TV, internet, public performance, sound recording etc.). The publication date and timing of the communication of the Swiss entry (including song title, performers and composers/lyricists) will be determined by SRG SSR.

42. SRG SSR reserves the right to amend these regulations at any time or adapt them in line with the international regulations. No claims can be asserted by participants arising from any changes to the regulations.

43. Legal recourse is excluded.

44. The German-language version of these regulations applies.
